The content of this Illuminations column usually comes from personal experiences that God sends my way. Only occasionally does a story come along from an outside source that so grabs my attention that I feel compelled to share it.
From the mouths of babes…
In the case of the following anecdote, I have long since forgotten the original author but I’ve seen it often enough in different places to assume that it is a part of our Americana lore. You may have seen it yourself, but it is worth repeating. A certain father was trying to read a magazine when his little girl kept badgering him to show her what the United States of America looked like. The father thumbed through his magazine and found an ad containing a map of the continental United States. He tore the ad from the magazine and then cut the map into a number of pieces. He handed them to his daughter.
“Take these into the other room and see if you can put the pieces back together. Then you’ll have a map of the United States, and you will know what it looks like,” he said to his little girl. She quickly departed with puzzle pieces and tape in hand, only to return a short time later. The father was surprised that she had finished the puzzle so quickly and asked the girl how she was able to do it. “It was easy,” she responded. “There was a picture of Jesus on the back side. Once I got Jesus back where He belonged, then our country just came together.”
Out of the mouths of babes! We know these truths but we just don’t stop long enough to remember what it is all about. Jesus is the answer to all the woes in our great nation (as well as in the world as a whole). When people have Jesus in their hearts, they don’t think about renting trucks and mowing down pedestrians or taking a gun into Walmart and using shoppers as target practice.
God can always use you
Jesus tells us in the Bible that He did not come to heal the healthy, but the sick. And we have a lot of sick people running around that are in desperate need of miraculous healing. We—that’s you and me— are the instruments
through which Jesus will go about bringing this healing to a suffering world.
There are at least three very effective ways in which we can go about this:
- Praying for the lost in this world
- Demonstrating Christian love in our own lives
- Sharing the gospel with those both close and afar
Our enemies will never listen to us if we shun them or consider them as less than us. Jesus tells us to pray for and even love those who cause us grief. He didn’t say it would be easy, and it certainly is not. But God did promise us that what we cannot do, He can. And He is going to do it through our hands, our feet and our voices.
