Word Among Us Helps Train Asian Pastors

In January and February, Gail and David Knox and Susan Woodward of Word Among Us Ministries traveled to Southeast Asia to teach pastors, students, and missionaries how to study the Bible.

The three departed Jan. 31 for a predominantly Buddhist country, where they taught a group of 20 students to use Gail’s Easy-to-Learn Inductive method of studying the Bible—a method that uses scripture to interpret scripture. Students came from miles around by bus, river boat and foot.

“Study aids like commentaries are virtually non-existent in their language,” said Knox, who has been teaching the Bible for more than 20 years. “This is why it’s absolutely vital that they learn to study the Bible on their own, without the use of those aids. This way, they can develop the skills they need to explore, understand and share God’s Word.”

Knox taught the 20 students at the local Bible fellowship via a translator six hours every day for five days. The students also completed daily assignments during the evening hours.

The eagerness of the students surprised Knox. They stayed up until 11 p.m. to complete the assignments they had been given, and were excited to share what they had learned.

“That first day, temperatures were in the 90s. There was no breeze to cool us, the chairs were hard, and we’d been through six hours of tough and tedious teaching,” Knox said. “Yet, at the end of that day, the students asked for an assignment so they could put into practice what they’d learned. I cannot remember when I’ve taught students who were so eager!”

The pastor of the Bible Fellowship plans to translate Knox’s material into their native tongue so they can pass the knowledge along to others in their country. Knox was thrilled to hear the news.

“We trained 20,” she said. “And those 20 will train many, many more!”

Knox hopes to return next year, and is raising support for the trip through Word Among Us Ministries.
