The Oldest Profession
A doctor, a civil engineer, and a computer scientist were arguing about what was the oldest profession in the world. The doctor remarked, “Well, in the Bible it says that God created Eve from a rib taken from Adam. This clearly required surgery, so I can rightly claim that mine is the oldest profession in the world.”
The civil engineer interrupted and said, “But even earlier in Genesis it says that God created the order of the heavens and earth out of chaos. This was the first and certainly the most spectacular application of civil engineering in all of history. Therefore, fair doctor, you are wrong; mine is the oldest profession in the world!”
The computer scientist leaned back in his chair, smiled and said confidently, “Ah, but who do you think created that chaos?”
Always At Your Disposal
It’s helpful to remember that when you are about to throw your computer out the window you are not the only one to experience such frustration. Maybe it would be a good time to stop and reflect on the fruit of the Holy Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. These are all yours and yours abundantly. And these are more than sufficient to keep your computer resting quietly on your desk.
So you never beat your brains against a computer? No problem. The fruits of the Holy Spirit are yours for whatever struggle you come up against. Don’t forget to use them. Your life will be all the better for it.
