“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” Acts 1:8 (ESV)
Receiving The Holy Spirit
The last thing Jesus told His disciples before ascending into heaven was that they would receive the power of the Holy Spirit and become His witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and even to the remotest parts of the earth.
Today we are making great strides as far as the remote areas are concerned, but what about here at home? In the church? Within our families? Next door?
We hear of revivals, miracles and great numbers of people coming to Christ all over the world.
God is moving in countries that persecute Christians and deny Christ. Why then, if we can reach those places, can’t we reach people closer to home? The truth may be uncomfortable for some, but we must face it and speak out in love before it is too late.
Presenting The Gospel
In the most remote areas, the gospel is presented in its simplest form: “Jesus Christ and Him crucified.” There is no entertainment factor to deal with, only the word of God and unlimited liberty for the Holy Spirit to move in and through the people. With no time restraints, videos and other gimmicks, worship takes the limelight and the message is delivered in its undiluted form. The result is more like the early (Acts) church than the church that exists today within the borders of our more developed nations.
An immense mission field exists today within the Church itself, right here at home. We are Jesus’s witnesses, conveniently located right inside her doors. Let’s get back to the simple truth of the cross and the reality that Jesus died for our sins. Let’s receive the power of the Holy Spirit that will empower the good news to convict others to repent.
Let us be the kind of witnesses Jesus commanded us to be.
