Being Left a Gift of Peace
Jesus said in John 14:27 [NLT2]:
“I am leaving you with a gift – peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.” And in John 16:33, “I have told you all this so that you may have peace in Me. Here on earth, you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”
The above verses make it quite clear that as long as believers live on this earth, the only true peace we can have is a gift from Jesus.
In fact, Jesus says in Matthew 10:34, “Don’t imagine that I came to bring peace to the earth! I came not to bring peace, but a sword.”
He goes on to say we will have enemies in our own households but true believers will love Jesus over everyone and everything.
Relying Too Often On Ourselves
We hear much in the humanistic realm about achieving world peace. Likewise, in some religious circles, we hear preaching on the power of positive thinking and how this will somehow bring us peace. Some would even go so far as to say in the near future we will find peace and safety on the earth not because of Jesus but because of our own sufficiency and wisdom.
Paul warned us of these days in I Thessalonians 5:1-3:
“Now concerning how and when all this will happen, dear brothers and sisters, we don’t really need to write you. For you know quite well that the day of the Lord’s return will come unexpectedly like a thief in the night. When people are saying, ‘Everything is peaceful and secure,’ then disaster will fall on them as suddenly as a pregnant women’s labor pains begin. And there will be no escape.”
According to God’s Word, peace is not something we are to look for in this world. It is just the opposite. Division and tribulations are expected until Jesus returns. We need not be surprised by the unrest, polarization of beliefs, and those seeking global unity. We need not fret over them. The Lord Jesus Christ said Himself not to be troubled or afraid. He provided for us by giving us His peace. Its a gift. Receive it, open it, and take heart that He has overcome the world.
