Climate Change: The Biblical View

Nothing is New

Environmentalists talk about climate change as if it’s a new thing. God’s word clearly teaches in Romans 8:18-22 that climate change has been ever present since sin first came into the world. At this time, our current age—right now—all creation is eagerly awaiting that forthcoming day when God will reveal who His children really are.

God’s good and perfect plan for the world was corrupted by sin at its outset and so the children living on earth today are not the sinless, perfect children He created in the Garden of Eden.

In fact, all of creation was subjected to God’s curse because of the sin committed by Adam and Eve at the beginning of all history. Death and decay have been ever present in the earth since then and will continue to be until the new heavens, new earth and new Jerusalem come down from heaven. Then, and only then, will the earth’s climate discontinue its changing.

A Perfect World will Come to Pass

Paul says in Romans 8:22, “For we know that all creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time.” Melting of the polar caps, pollution of air, land and sea, the extinction of species, and a myriad of other changes have been constant realities throughout the ages.

There is no need to be anxious about it. Of course, we must do all we can to be good and faithful stewards of God’s creation, to keep it and to nourish it. But the simple truth is, we can do nothing to stop its ultimate demise. All we need to do is look upward and onward to the future glory that is in store for us.

The perfect world that God has always intended will come to pass. And there will be no sin, and no death or decay. This is the hope we were given when first we were saved. We have the assurance of God that it will happen!
