Prince of the Power of the Air

Before We Followed Christ…

In Ephesians 2:2, we read about the prince of the power of the air.  In the New Living Translation (NLT), the passage is worded this way:  “You used to live in sin, just like the rest of the world, obeying the devil—the commander of the powers in the unseen world.  He is the spirit at work in the hearts of those who refuse to obey God.”

There is no mistake that this prince of the power of the air is none other than Satan himself.  It also tells us rather emphatically that he is at work in the hearts of all who refuse to obey God.  In verse 3a we read, “All of us used to live that way, following the passionate desires and inclinations of our sinful nature.”

This may be hard for some to hear, but the truth is that before we followed Christ, we followed the devil.  In fact, we were helpless to do otherwise, as it is impossible to follow Christ in our own strength.  It is therefore imperative that we  pay close attention to the verses that follow.

Mercy And Grace

It is only, only, ONLY by His mercy and grace that our hearts are kept safe from the spirit that tries to get us to refuse to obey God.  God tells us that even though we were dead because of our sins, He gave us life when He raised Jesus from the dead.  He did it.  We didn’t, we had nothing to do with it!   But because of Him, we are now seated with Christ in the heavenlies at the right hand of God the Father.

Once we are saved by His grace through faith and once we understand fully this is His gift to us, we must realize we cannot take credit for any of it.  He did what He did out of selfless love and all He wants in exchange is for us to do the good works He prepared in advance for us to do (Ephesians 2:10).  He planned these good works before the very foundation of the world.  He planned our salvation before the beginning of life itself.  The God who created all things also gave us a seat at His right hand as a permanent gift from Him to every believer.
