Role of Woman Seminar

In late November ‘08, Word Among Us Ministries took its Bible-based teaching “The Role of Woman in God’s Plan for the Universe” to Yangon. This is not an easy subject to tackle here in the States, but in a culture where women are considered inferior, it is radical.

“I had a lot of trepidation about broaching the topic in a culture so different from my own. I am always committed to teaching the truth exactly as the Bible states it, but I don’t like to upset anyone and my audience was both male and female,” instructor Gail Knox says. “I had concerns that the truth about what God expects from women might be disturbing to some who have been taught a different gospel.”

Gail laid a foundation using scriptures showing that God calls every believer to a specific task. “Male and female, He calls each to serve in a specific way,” she explains. “And when called, the believer’s appropriate response is to answer as those in the Bible did, ‘Here I am, Lord. Send me!’ ” The Bible teaches that God also gifts those He calls with whatever is needed to accomplish the task. Gail believes that not to use these gifts in the manner He intends is a sin. “If God calls a woman to be a teacher or to any other position considered for men only,” Gail continues, “and if He gifts her with the necessary tools for that responsibility, then she is to do whatever it is He’s calling her to. It’s that simple.”

The major premise underlying the teaching according to Knox is the truth found in Galatians 3:28 (NIV): —There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. “If there is neither male nor female for everyone who is in Christ,” Knox asks, “why do we act as if there is?”

After returning to the States, Knox says that the concerns she first had about the subject matter being too radical for the Burmese audience proved to be groundless. “The response was far better than expected. I was deeply touched by their comments in the evaluation on the last day. God did a mighty there for sure.”
